The Buddha’s Wife

Ruth Silcock Pearson

Summary

Or, Answer the following questions (2.a-e)

This is an ironical (Ao+UofTds) poem presents the repression (pTkL8g) of women but it is never realised. She indirectly means to say that men are by nature ‘cruel’ and tries to repress women. This poem is the blend of satire, humour and sadness (e). It is a feministic voice. This poem mentions some people like Buddha, Gandhi, St Paul, Krishna who all are not able to respect and favour women (a). The poetess says that when Lord Buddha left his wife in the palace and he went for his own perfection and enlightenment (1fg), she definitely felt unhappy but nobody understood her repressive feeling. People remember only Buddha, not his wife.

Mahatma Gandhi was admired by all although he was skinny (thin), quaint (odd). He was a saint and he hardly spent his much time with her; who understands her feeling? People remember only Gandhi, not his wife. She was really very sad. Buddha and Gandhi may not have mistreated (b’Aof{jxf/) their wives but had not understood their feelings (b).

The Christian women wear hats in the church because they frighten from their husbands; who might be tempted and betrayed from the prayers’ shining, heavy, long and free hair. St. Paul told the women to cover their hair due to the fear of being side-eyed. The milkmaids -uf]lkgLx?) dance and cry a long calling their Lord Krishna ‘Kanaiya’, they spill milk and lay white flowers on the green land even their cows feel tired but Kaniya does not come. Who understands the feelings of the milkmaids? People remember only Krishna, not the milkmaids.

The poetess attacks patriarchy (k’?ifjfb ). Men say that god has chosen men as his representative- to be his voice, his hand, his pen, to utter his law, to touch his grave, to write his books, to read his face, to be his cannel to every human but not to the women because woman is the cause of the fall of mean according to the bible. Women are pushed out of the main stream of human civilization (dfgj ;Eotfjf6 aflx/ ws]lnPsf 5g\ dlxnfx? . ;+;f/sf] lgdf{0f / clwkTo k’?ifsf] x’g’ k5{ / x’G5 eGg]x?nfO{ sljoqLn] em6f/f] xfg]sL 5g\ oxfF . ) and I agree with the poetess (c). But I do not think the poetess is bias (kIfkftL) to the men. It is the reality that the women’s feeling are not recorded and respected and highlighted (d).
